The Geological Survey of NSW (GSNSW) collates data on the distribution and type of mineral occurrences across NSW.

Reticulated cerussite Broken Hill

GSNSW geologists specialising in mineral systems studies use this data to investigate the way mineralisation occurs to help locate future mineral deposits. They manage the NVCL spectroscopic drillcore scanning technology that generates digital information on rock, ore and alteration minerals in drill core.

Mineral systems studies teams provide:

  • metallogenic mapping
  • identification and documentation of key mineral systems in NSW
  • statewide synthesis and dating of mineral deposits
  • systematic classification of deposits
  • recognition of large mineral systems at a regional scale
  • collation and synthesis of data and the corresponding photo-logs of scanned drillcore from the AuScope National Virtual Core Library (NVCL) program
