From 1 December 2017, the new Demand Response Program became operational in NSW. This innovative program will help maintain NSW energy security when it’s most under pressure, such as during extreme heat wave events. The $14 million program is jointly funded by the NSW Government and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).

The idea behind demand response is simple. At critical peak times, Australia’s electricity market operator, the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), will activate the demand response and participating users will reduce their energy usage in return for an incentive. The reduction in energy use helps restore the balance between supply and demand, taking pressure off the energy system when it’s most needed.
