24th April 2018

The Resources Regulator has prohibited underground mining operations on the N3 panel at Wongawilli Colliery, near Wollongong.

The prohibition notice was issued following an incident on 21 April 2018 where a mine worker was struck on the lower leg by a piece of coal which fell from the upper section of the rib. It is understood the worker fractured his fibula as a result.

Inspectors attended the mine and inspected the underground scene on 23 April 2018 and identified concerns in relation to  apparent failure of fibreglass bolts in multiple areas. This resulted in the immediate issuing of a notice prohibiting mining in the N3 Panel.

The prohibition notice will remain in place until a detailed investigation into the cause and circumstances of the incident has been completed, and the Resources Regulator is satisfied that appropriate risk controls have been put into place to ensure workers at the mine are not exposed to risk.
As an investigation is underway no further information will be made available at this time.
