27th March 2018

The Resources Regulator has prohibited underground longwall mining operations at Dendrobium Colliery, near Wollongong.

The prohibition notice was issued on 26 March 2018 following an incident where a mine worker was struck by coal falling off the coal face while changing cutting picks on the longwall shearer. The worker underwent x-rays after receiving physiotherapy, which identified a spinal fracture.

An inspector attended the mine and inspected the underground scene after the incident was reported to the Regulator. This resulted in the issue of a notice prohibiting the use of the longwall shearer to cut coal or stone and completion of the frictional ignition checks and pick replacement.

The prohibition notice will remain in place until the mine undertakes a number of remedial actions, including reviewing and altering work procedures and implementing training for all relevant workers. The notice will not be lifted until the Regulator is satisfied that workers at the mine are not exposed to risk.

As an investigation is underway no further information will be made available at this time.
