8th September 2017

The Resources Regulator has issued a notice to Mandalong Coal Mine prohibiting all workers from entering the site’s underground workings - with the exception of those undertaking safety-related activities.

The notice follows an incident on 5 September 2017 where methane gas levels reached 3.5 per cent and workers were not withdrawn from the underground workings.

The mine’s trigger action response plan requires that workers are immediately withdrawn from the mine when methane levels reach 3 per cent.

The prohibition notice will remain in place until a detailed investigation into the cause and circumstances of the incident has been completed and the Resources Regulator is satisfied that appropriate risk controls have been put into place to ensure workers at the mine are not exposed to risk.
